Where to stay with kids

Phuket with kids

The easy first-timer base: lots of family resorts, manageable airport transfers and a beach for every age. The trick is picking the right stretch of coast.

A note from Ron

If it's your first family trip to Thailand, Phuket is where I point most people. Most families skip Patong. Kata or Karon, a resort with a kids' pool, and a transfer sorted for the first night. What I see go wrong most is a lovely hotel on the wrong stretch of coast, so pick the area first.

5-1112+

Walkable: yes

Beach: Calmer Dec-Apr.

Karon

Long, roomy beach with something for mixed ages.

Under 55-1112+

Bang Tao and Laguna

Big resorts along a long beach, closest to the airport of the main family areas.

Under 55-1112+

Resort-based holidays for any age.

Walkable: depends where you stay. Boat Avenue is the food hub

Beach: Long beach, calm in dry season.

Mai Khao

Very quiet, near the airport, you stay in the resort.

5-1112+

Fine for resort days, but the sea needs care.

Walkable: no

Beach: Steep drop-off and rips. Swimming isn't recommended May-Oct.

Patong

The busiest and loudest beach, nightlife around Bangla Road.

Why families often skip it: loud late. Some families do fine there, most prefer Kata or Karon.

Getting there

Airport to your base

From Phuket airport it's roughly 20-35 minutes to Bang Tao and Laguna, 50-65 minutes to Kata and Karon, and 40-90 minutes to Patong depending on traffic. Add time in the afternoon rush.

Car seats

Ordinary taxis rarely have them. Transfer companies offer them on request, subject to availability: pre-book, give the seat type and your child's age, and get it confirmed in writing. Or bring your own.

No car seat needed?

Then you don't have to pre-book at all.

Never pre-books, just takes a car from the desk downstairs on arrival.Group member (airport not named), Oct 2026

Beaches with kids

Kata Noi

Shallow and calm in dry season, the easiest for toddlers. Rougher than nearby bays in monsoon.

Kata and Karon

Wide, soft sand. Calm in dry season. In May-Oct they get surf, which teens love and little ones shouldn't swim in.

Kamala

Gently sloping, a good pick for small kids in dry season.

Mai Khao

Beautiful and empty, but with a steep drop-off and rips. Treat it as a walking beach May-Oct.

The one rule

Red flag means no swimming, whatever the sky looks like. The Andaman side is calmer Nov-Apr and rough May-Oct.
